Abstract
This paper explores the process of monophthongization, a type of phonetic reduction in which diphthongs—
complex vowel sounds involving a gliding movement between two articulatory positions—are replaced by
single, stable vowel sounds. The study aims to analyze the linguistic, social, and historical factors that contribute
to monophthongization in English and to evaluate its implications for phonological change and dialect
variation.
